Leopold Anzengruber was educated as a sculptor in Florence, and in 1948 he founded Anzengrüber-Keramic in Vienna. Inspired by paintings by the North African Muslims Berbere / Moors, he began to create small African figurines. They became a huge business success.
During the 1950'ies other European studios had success making similar figurines
In 1958, Anzengrüber had 96 employees.
